YPN is a local non-profit organization committed to uplifting and enriching underserved parts of our community via avenues such as health, housing, education, and jobs. Once administrators at a local jail reached out to us last year regarding a shortage of literature for inmates, we felt immediately compelled to assist. As such, we’re launching our Unlocking Literacy book drive to collect books for libraries in the local jails. This year, we will be donating books to Prince William Adult Detention Center in Manassas, VA.

Unlocking Literacy will take place on MLK Day of Service 2017. We hope to collect 500 new or lightly-used paperback books that feature: authors of color, African-American classics or best sellers, and other literature highlighting minority perspectives. Donations are also accepted, which will be used to purchase books.

Unlocking Literacy marks an excellent opportunity to give back, while also celebrating literacy and diversity on MLK Day.

Volunteers are needed to:

- Collect and arrange books

- Write notes to inmates to be placed in the books
