Northern Virginia Urban League Young Professional Network Programs

College Survival
College Survival 101, YPN's signature service event.

College Survival 101 is an all day, fun-filled experience with the resources, networks, support, assistance and guidance to prepare youth to be college-ready and not just college-eligible. This program is open to all high school students in the DMV area.

College Survival 101 consists of workshops with themes including- academics, financial aid, social life, life skills, and parents. The day's events consist of workshops, a luncheon, and a College Life Expo. Following the workshops, students and parents attend a luncheon featuring a dynamic guest speaker, and eligible students participate in a scholarship raffle to win Book Scholarships!

Do you know a high school student in the District, Maryland, or Virginia area who is considering college? Do they have questions that you as a mentor/parent can't answer? Are you a parent who worries about how you will help get your high school student into college? Do you know a 12th grader who can benefit from winning a book scholarship? Well, CS101 is the perfect event! Share it with every parent or a high school student you know. This is an event they don't want to miss!

Political Forum
Annual Political Forum : Our Voice. Our Vote. : Educate. Employ. Empower.

YPN recognizes the importance of empowering all people to take an active role in the political process. Through our annual Political Forum, YPN informs Northern Virginia residents about the issues critical to the social and economic empowerment of all people. We examine issues such as civil rights, affordable housing and workforce development. During national and regional elections, YPN invites candidates running for office to discuss their platforms and speak directly to residents about pertinent community issues.

The Political Forum is free and open to the public. We welcome any interested community member. A particular focus will be placed on the candidates platforms and political visions to empower African Americans and other underserved communities in Northern Virginia.

To learn more about YPN's political forum, please contact Director of Political Engagement at politicalengagement@nvulypn.org.

Black Opal

Black Opal is a black-tie fundraising awards gala hosted by the Northern Virginia Urban League Young Professionals Network (NVULYPN).  Funds raised from the gala will be used to provide scholarships to area high school students and directly support NVULYPN’s annual programs, such as College Survival, the Political Forum, and Opportunity to Thrive. Drawing in leaders from not only the DC metropolitan area, but across the country, this annual event has quickly become one of this area's most anticipated charity events. Come walk the red carpet, honor your local heroes, and then dance the night away in your swanky attire!
