NOVA Urban League Young Professionals Network Honors Kwanzaa
#BlackHistory36: Kwanzaa Everyday Celebrates Tradition and Freedom House Museum
ALEXANDRIA, VA – The Northern Virginia Urban League Young Professionals Network (YPN) will host a Kwanzaa activity and history session as part of its Freedom House tour and discussion series, #BlackHistory365: Kwanzaa Everyday. The event, held on Tuesday December 27th at 7:00 pm at the YPN headquarters located at 1315 Duke Street, Alexandria, VA 22314, is free and open to all ages.
At Kwanzaa Everyday, participants will learn the history of Kwanzaa, assemble a traditional altar and discuss the principles of Kwanzaa and items that are significant to the holiday. Youth are also invited to participate in arts and craft projects. A tour of the Freedom House Museum, a museum dedicated to sharing the stories of enslaved Africans and African-Americans in Northern Virginia and beyond, will be led by YPN Historian Salim Adofo.
Kwanzaa is an African American and Pan African Holiday, rooted in African culture through the seven communitarian principles: Umoja (Unity), Kujichagulia (Self-Determination), Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility), Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics), Nia (Purpose), Kuumba (Creativity), and Imani (Faith).
“We called this session Kwanzaa Everyday because we believe these principles are helpful to everyone each day of our lives,” said YPN President Garrett James. “We believe they directly support the National Urban League’s goal of empowering communities and changing lives.”
